Terry and Nancy are going to Dominican Republic, possibly as soon as Monday.
It’s a good thing we finished our course in crisis intervention last week at Denver Seminary. We are already being called to put it to use.
CURE International is a non-profit Christian medical organization that does a lot of orthopedic surgeries for disabled children in a number of developing countries. Click here Cure International Website They have a 40-bed hospital and a staff of 5 doctors and 20 nurses in the capitol of Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo. Since Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, you can imagine how intensively engaged this small staff is with the tragic consequences of the recent earthquake there. Not only that, but CURE's staff members from other countries are being funneled through Dominican Republic to participate in serving the people of Haiti in their cataclysmic need.
CURE International has asked our organization, Barnabas International, to provide two staff members who are trained in crisis intervention and debriefing to provide pastoral care to CURE’s medical personnel as they cycle out of Haiti and back to DR. It’s part of a wise plan for helping the first-responders stay healthy emotionally and spiritually. We said, "Here we are; send us." And Barnabas did.
When we signed up for our intensive 1-week course, we didn’t know that it would involve an immediate 4-week practicum! But at least we will get to use what we learned. That’s a great way of consolidating new information.
We should have internet access, so we expect to be able to connect to people who have far more experience than we do when questions arise. We may be in Dominican Republic for three to four weeks and would appreciate your prayers very much.
