"Christmas in March?" You may well ask. Yup. That's what you get this year. For the past few years I have been writing a new short story every Christmas. These are historical fiction pieces imagining happenings that might have taken place in the years of Jesus' childhood. I try to stay true to anything we know to be factual about Jesus' early life. And the stories are informed by my interactions with my own grandchildren. For that reason, I have resisted the temptation to get ahead of myself and write two or three in a short span. I would get too far ahead of my grandchildren's chronological ages and perhaps lose touch with that source of human insight. So just one story per Christmas.
Then came Christmas 2009 and I didn't get the story done. Yes, I was busy writing, rehearsing and performing "Barnabas Goes to the North Pole" with Nancy. But that is no excuse. I found a few hours here and there and I even sat down to write. For whatever reason, the story would not develop during that season. But I didn't give up. Now you have your Christmas story for 2009; it's just a few months late. I called it, predictably, "Sixth Birthday" and it is now posted with the others in the Christmas Series elsewhere on this page. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!
