Hold That Thought...

Well, this morning we got a phone call from the HR manager at CURE International in Pennsylvania, who had first contacted us. She had just been talking with the CURE director on the ground in Haiti and he was questioning how much good we would be able to do in the Dominican Republic. His teams are so busy in Haiti that he couldn’t envision them spending enough time in DR to keep us profitably occupied. His thought was that we should fly right into Port au Prince, Haiti, and work alongside the doctors and nurses at ground zero.

As you can imagine, that was such a departure from what we were preparing to do that we felt the need for input from others. We sought counsel from our director in Barnabas and from our missions director at church. Neither of them see us as the best fit for that changed assignment and, I have to admit, we weren’t too sure either. I mean, we are willing to go wherever God sends us, but it is not always clear that an emergency need equates with God’s call.

Heeding the greater wisdom of our community means that we will remain at home, at least for now, and available if they decide they could use us in the Dominican Republic, after all. In the meantime, one of our colleagues who has a great deal more training and experience will go to Haiti on February 1. He will then be able to assess what further needs exist that we might be able to help address.

So here we sit with our calendar cleared, our bags half packed and our hearts already across the waves... But we don't know what will happen next. Don’t stop praying for us!
